About Dr. Tsui

Jonathan C. Tsui, MD is a vitreoretinal physician and surgeon at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, New Jersey Medical Center. His academic journey began with an undergraduate degree in finance at Rutgers Business School and medical doctorate from Rutgers- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he received multiple honors and was inducted into the Arnold P. Gold Humanism Honor Society. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at the University of California-Irvine and a residency in ophthalmology at Geisinger Eye Institute where he served as chief resident. He then completed a two-year medical and surgical vitreoretinal fellowship at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. 

He has delivered numerous presentations locally and internationally including at the International Retinal Imaging Society, American Uveitis Society, the Retina Society, Atlantic Coast Retina Club, and others. He has participated in multiple clinical trials including studying novel agents to treat geographic atrophy in age-related macular degeneration, macular edema in diabetic retinopathy, and more.

Dr. Tsui has authored numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and original publications including in the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, RETINA, Retinal Cases and Brief Reports, Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases, and Ocular Immunology and Inflammation. Dr. Tsui also serves as a reviewer for journals such as RETINA and Retinal Cases and Brief Reports.

Over the years, he has received numerous awards including the Scheie Eye Fellow Excellence in Teaching Award, American Medical Association Physician’s Recognition Award, New Jersey Health Foundation Michael Kosloski Scholarship, Roslyn Kuchin Scholarship, Aresty Research Center Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award, the Presidential Scholarship at Rutgers University, and more.

Committed to serving others, Dr. Tsui has volunteered throughout his career locally and internationally, including at Promise Clinic, a free health clinic in New Brunswick, NJ and in the rural villages of the Dominican Republic.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Ocular Trauma, and Vit-Buckle Society.

When Jonathan is not operating or seeing patients, he can be found spending time with family and friends, trying out new restaurants, cooking new recipes, or playing soccer and volleyball.
